The district of Skrapar ( Albanian : Rrethi i Skraparit ) was one of the 36 administrative districts of Albania that were abolished in the summer of 2015 after an administrative reform. The district had an area of 775 square kilometers, roughly the traditional geographical and cultural landscape of Skrapar . It was located in the central mountains of southern Albania and belongs to the Qark Berat . The main town was Çorovoda .
According to the census, the district had 16,721 inhabitants in 2011. Of the around 47,000 inhabitants who lived in the district in 1989, almost two thirds have emigrated in 20 years. Around three quarters of the population belonged to the Bektashi , half of the rest belong to Sunni Islam . There was also a small number of Orthodox .
The term Skrapar is an old name of the region that is known throughout Albania for the best raki in the country and folkloric , polyphonic music. The original region also includes some areas adjacent to the south in Përmet County .
The area of the district included in particular the valley on the middle reaches of the Osum . South of Çorovoda, the Osum forms a deep canyon for around 15 kilometers , which is a tourist attraction of Skrapar. Mountains of considerable height rise on both sides of the valley. In the northwest of the area of the district lies the Tomorr ( 2415 m above sea level ), the highest mountain in the region. Its lower southern tip is completely in a circle, the northern tip on the border. Only the area east of Tomorr was drained not to Osum, but to Devoll .
Apart from the valley floor of the Osum, the whole region is hardly developed. Most of the villages in the hill country are difficult to access and can only be reached with off-road vehicles with high ground clearance.
After a territorial reform in 2015, the area of the district was divided between the two new municipalities of Skrapar and Poliçan . Eight small parishes in the south were merged with Çorovoda, while Poliçan was combined with two parishes in Berat County .
