Poliçan ( Albanian also Poliçani ) is a city in southern Albania with 4318 inhabitants (2011 census). Poliçan is the second largest town in the Skrapar region . The city is located on a hill above the Osum River on the western slope of the Tomorr massif, around 20 kilometers south of Berat and 15 km north of the district capital Çorovoda .

Poliçan, located deep in the southern Albanian mountains, was a center of Albanian arms production , which at least partially took place in underground caverns . Among other things, an Albanian replica of the Kalashnikov was made. During the communist regime , the region could therefore not be visited by foreigners. After that, until 2003, when the manufacturing facilities were finally closed, the manufactured weapons were destroyed again. The most important employer in town was lost.
Poliçan were founded in the 1960s as a regional administrative center and industrial location. In 2015 the municipality ( bashkia ) was merged with the two neighboring municipalities of Tërpan (1716 inhabitants) and Vërtop (4919 inhabitants), which belonged to the district of Berat . The whole municipality of Poliçan has 10,953 inhabitants (as of 2011).
