Çorovoda ( Albanian  also Çorovodë ) is a city in southern Albania with around 4000 inhabitants (2011). It is the capital of the municipality of Skrapar . The name comes from Bulgarian (Черна вода Tscherna Woda) and means black water .

geography

Ura e Kasabashit , Ottoman bridge over the Çorovoda River near Çorovoda

The city is located in the remote mountains of southern Albania in the Osum Valley at the mouth of the Çorovoda River.

Until 2015 Çorovoda formed an independent community ( bashkia ) . Then it was merged with the other parishes in Skrapar County , excluding the city of Poliçan . The following places belong to the community today: Bogova, Çepan, Gjerbës, Leshnja, Potom, Vendresha, Zhepa.

Location and traffic

Çorovoda is away from important traffic routes. The only paved road connects the town with Berat in the north, 50 kilometers away . The dirt road to Përmet is now the only drivable route through the mountains out of the Osum Valley. Some unpaved roads lead from the city to the surrounding villages.

tourism

The close vicinity of the city offers several attractions for active vacationers.

Coming from the southeast, the Osum flows through the Osum Gorge : several canyons , almost 15 kilometers long, with some 100 meter high rock faces, the last of which ends at Çorovoda. The gorges can be traversed with kayaks and inflatable boats .

To the northeast of the city, the Çorovoda River has formed the deep and difficult-to-access Gradec Gorge , which can be seen from some points . The rock walls here are up to 350 meters high.

In the north-western rock face of the Gradec Gorge - just under two kilometers south of the village of Radësh - lies the Pirogoshi Cave . It is inhabited by bats , is rich in stalagmites and stalactites and with a length of 1500 m it is the deepest cave in Albania.

Halfway between the southern end of the Gradec Gorge and the city, the Çorovoda River is spanned by an old Ottoman stone bridge called Ura e Kasabashit . An important trade route used to run over this bridge.
