Sara Jane Moore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sara Jane Moore (born Sara Jane Kahn February 15, 1930 in Charleston , West Virginia , USA ) is an American assassin .

On September 22, 1975, Moore attempted to assassinate then American President Gerald Ford in front of the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco . It happened just 17 days after former Manson Family member Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme tried to assassinate Ford on her part. From a distance of 12 meters, she fired a single shot at the President. The missile missed the President because the passer-by grabbed Oliver Sipple Moore's arm and then pulled her to the ground. He used his hand to prevent the weapon from being fired again. The shot fired from Moore's .38 caliber revolver ricocheted off the hotel entrance and slightly injured a passerby.

Moore had begun training as a nurse, was a member of the United States Women's Army Corps, and was married five times before turning to "revolutionary politics" in the 1970s. During the kidnapping of Patty Hearst she became an informant for the FBI and was supposed to collect information about the kidnappers as a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army . After her exposure, she turned away from the group and wanted to shake up the political system on her own.

Moore had been reviewed by the Secret Service earlier in 1975 , but it was not seen as a threat to the President.

Moore pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of the President and was sentenced to life in prison on January 15, 1976. She was housed at Alderson Federal Prison Camp in Alderson, West Virginia, from which she escaped in 1989. Two days later she returned voluntarily. Upon her return, Moore was taken to a higher security facility.

She was released from prison on December 31, 2007.
