Përmet ( Albanian  also  Përmeti ; Greek Πρεμετή Premetí̱ ; Turkish Premedi ) is a small town in southern Albania . The city has not quite 6000 inhabitants (2011). It is the local center in the southern Vjosatal and was formerly the seat of the district of the same name .

geography

Gur i Qytetit rock formation with mosque

Përmet is on the Vjosa . Behind the town rises the Mali i Dhëmbelit ( 2050  m above sea level ), part of the Trebeshina - Dhëmbel - Nemërçka mountain range. The city center can only be reached via a single bridge from the road on the eastern bank of the Vjosa. The main square is just across the bridge. Directly on the river bank, a little below the bridge, there is a huge, free-standing, cube-shaped rock. On the Gur i Qytetit (city stone) there are still some remains of walls from the Ottoman period.

history

The oldest mentions of the place come from the 15th century. Little remains of the old town of Përmetis. The Orthodox Nicholas Church (Shën Nikolle) survived all fires and communist atheism campaigns. Other important churches can be found in the neighboring villages of Leusa and Kosina .

A statue in the city center commemorates Sami Frashëri and the Rilindja movement , which had one of its centers in the southern Albanian mountains and was particularly supported by the Bektashi .

Partisan memorial (alb. Lapidary ) in the center

After the failed attack by the Italians on Greece in October 1940, Përmet was captured by Greek troops in December and only evacuated in response to the German Balkan offensive (April 1941). In the further course of the Second World War , the region around Përmet was a center of anti-fascist resistance. The Italian army and Wehrmacht burned the city down several times. From the summer of 1943, the communist partisans succeeded in gaining the upper hand in the southern Albanian mountains. They were among the first areas in the country without foreign occupation.

From May 24th to 28th 1944 the 1st anti-fascist congress of national liberation took place in Përmet . This congress in Përmet , made up of 186 delegates from all over the country, elected the 118-person Anti-Fascist Council for National Liberation (Këshilli antifashist nacional-çlirimtar) , a transitional parliament . It elected the 13-member Anti-Fascist National Liberation Committee headed by Enver Hoxha , which had the powers of a transitional government and which was renamed Berat in October, the democratic government of Albania . Since the communists were able to take power in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation Committee , Përmet received great attention in communist historiography.

economy

Përmet and the region are heavily influenced by agriculture . Përmet - also known as the city of roses - is famous for its wineries. The tragic death of seven young men during the lottery uprising witnesses the economic depression following the collapse of communism. Gradually the region catches up. Today in Përmet there are two private, local TV channels in addition to a hospital and a high school .

In agriculture, there are companies in the areas of poultry production, beekeeping, cheese production and the production of pickled vegetables and spreads. There is also an embroidery shop in Përmet.
