Simon Stefani

Simon Stefani (born January 3, 1929 in Përmet , † August 2, 2000 ) was an Albanian politician of the Party of Labor of Albania .

biography

In 1958 Stefani, who is of Greek descent , became a member of the People's Assembly ( Kuvendi Popullor ) for the first time and was a member of the People's Assembly ( Kuvendi Popullor ) as a representative for the Berat district until 1966 in the fourth and fifth electoral terms .

At the 7th party congress of the PPSh in November 1976 he was elected as a candidate for the Politburo of the PPSh .

Between 1978 and 1991 he was again a member of the People's Assembly from the ninth to the eleventh legislative period . During this time he was from December 25, 1978 to November 22, 1982 chairman of the people's assembly and thus parliamentary president .

On May 7, 1979, he also became a member of the secretariat of the PPSh Central Committee and held this position for almost ten years until he left on February 2, 1989. At the 8th party congress of the PPSh in November 1981, he also became a member of the Politburo elected and belonged to this top leadership body of the party until December 1990.

After leaving the Central Committee secretariat, he succeeded Hekuran Isai as Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Minister of the Interior on February 2, 1989, and held these positions in the government of Prime Minister Adil Çarçani until July 9, 1990. As Minister of the Interior, he was also supreme Supervisor of the Sigurimi secret service . In a press release in the party newspaper Zëri i Popullit in 1990, he put the number of people in prisons and re-education camps at only 3,850, while foreign observers put between 20,000 and 40,000 prisoners.

Subsequently, he was a member of the government until December 23, 1990 as chairman of the State Control Commission and was the successor to Manush Myftiu in this position .

In 1994 he and former officials Ramiz Alia , Hekuran Isai and Adil Çarçani were charged with abuse of office and violation of civil rights. A court in Tirana resulted in the following convictions in July 1994: Alia nine years imprisonment , Stefani eight years, Isai five years and Çarçani five years imprisonment on probation. In January 1996, a court in Tirana ordered his arrest.
