The district of Berat ( Albanian : Rrethi i Beratit ) was one of the 36 administrative districts of Albania that were abolished in the summer of 2015 after an administrative reform. The district with an area of ​​915 km² belonged to the Qark of the same name . It had 97,942 inhabitants (2011). The district was named after the main town of Berat .

The Berat District covered an area south of the Myzeqe - level . It begins at its edge and encompasses the entire hill country around Berat with the lower Osum valley in the center. Further up in the valley followed the Skrapar district . On the eastern border lies the top of the Tomorr mountain ( 2414  m above sea level ), the most famous mountain in southern Albania.

economy

Apart from the town of Berat, which serves as a regional center and where gradually the tourism thanks to UNESCO - World Heritage Status is developing on the region lives almost exclusively from farming . While large areas outside the Osum Valley are very remote, there are already farms in the more central areas that produce with modern means. Wine is also made in many places in the region .

The road into the Osum Valley, which used to be an important caravan route , is now a dead end. The district of Berat is therefore not on any through route. Due to the flat Myzeqe plain, Berat is nevertheless quite well connected with the centers of Central Albania.

Communities

The area of ​​the former district is now part of the parishes ( Bashkia ) Berat and Ura Vajgurore . The Lumas parish also went to the Kuçova parish , and the Tërpan and Vërtop parishes to the Poliçan parish .
