geography

The east side of the mountain with the Tomorrica river

The Tomorr lies east of the city of Berat between the valleys of the Osum and the Tomorrica, a left tributary of the Devoll . The massif rises south of Elbasan from the central Albanian lowlands and stretches for dozens of kilometers in a north-south direction.

The mountain has two main peaks: in the north the 2415  m above sea level. A. high Çuka e Partizanit or Maja e Partizanit , around eight kilometers away the southern tip at 2402  m above sea level. A. On the other hand, Maja e Tomorrit usually refers to an elevation a few hundred meters north of the southern tip, 2379  m above sea level. A. measures. Another ten kilometers separate the southern tip from the southeastern mountain Mali i Kulmakut , at 2174  m above sea level. A. the third important elevation in the massif.

Ridge at the northern tip

The Tomorr is an anticline from limestone . Karst forms can be found particularly in the northern area . At the transition to the flysch in the west, several important sources emerge. In the east there is conglomerate rock .

The long ridge between the two main peaks is steeply sloping on both sides around the Çuka e Partizanit , rocky and heavily fissured, in a central section it is quite wide and wooded, in the south around the Maja e Tomorrit a narrow, bare knoll.

The Tomorrica River on the east side bears the same name as the mountain.

To the west of Tomorr is the city of Poliçan , at the southwest end of the Çorovoda massif , the capital of the Skrapar region . Roads lead from both places to the Kulmak Pass and from there to the southern summit. This is considered to be the highest point that can be reached by vehicles in Albania.

sacred mountain

Bektaschi-Türbe on the summit

On the southern tip is the grave of Abbas Ali , the Türbe of Abbas Ali . The Bektashi pilgrimage site is also called Father Tomorr . Abbas Ali was a half-brother of Husain , the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed , who both died in the Battle of Karbala . Abbas Ali's soul, in the belief of the Bektashi, settled on the mountain after his martyrdom before it ascended to heaven. Abbas Ali had never been to Albania during his lifetime.

The Sufi Order of the Bektashi celebrating the end of August (usually 20 to 25 August) a multi-day festival of sacrifice on the Tomorr, sometimes up to the 10,000 pilgrims come and go up the mountain. This was not allowed during the communist regime under Enver Hoxha . Religious activities only experienced a revival after the fall of communism in the early 1990s. A central part of the religious pilgrimage ritual is the ritual sacrifice of a sheep and a visit to the grave of Abbas Ali.

At the Kulmak Pass between the southern summit and Mali i Kulmakut stands the well-known Tekke Abaz Ali , which also offers accommodation to travelers and pilgrims.

Christians make a pilgrimage to the top of the mountain on Assumption Day .
