Berat, the "City of 1000 Windows", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Qark Berat ( Albanian  Qarku i Beratit ) is one of the twelve Qarks in Albania . It is located in the southern Albanian hinterland and has an area of ​​1798 square kilometers. The capital and seat of the council and prefect is Berat .

The Qark Berat covers an area in southern Albania on the middle and lower reaches of the Osum River around the city of Berat, the historical and economic center of the region. The southern part of the region is very mountainous. To the north it gradually changes into hill country, and the valley of the Osum, which flows from southeast to northwest, becomes wider and wider. The area in the far north around Kuçova belongs to the central Albanian Myzeqe plain. At 2,415  m above sea level A. is the Tomorr in eastern Qarks one of the highest mountains in southern Albania; he is surrounded by the national park named after him . The Shpirag ( 1197  m above sea level ) rises as a prominent mountain range west of Berat .

Today the Qark is divided into five municipalities. The area used to be divided into the three districts of Berat , Kuçova and Skrapar .

To the northwest is Elbasan Qark, Korça Qark to the east , Gjirokastra Qark south and Fier Qark to the west .

The population of the Qark is 142,003 people (2011 census), which corresponds to a decrease of more than a quarter in ten years.

The Sunni Islam (50.18%), the Bektashi (8.23%) and Orthodox Christianity (7.48%) are the most members religions. Also of atheism (3.42%) is common. Catholics (1.15%) are a small minority.

The Bektashi have an important sanctuary on Mount Tomorr, which is sacred to them, to which tens of thousands make pilgrimages on August 15th.

Politics and administration

The Qark Council (alb. Këshilli i Qarkut ) based in Berat has 50 members.

For the legislative periods of the Albanian parliament beginning in 2009 and 2013 , the Qark has eight members out of a total of 140.
