The Qark Elbasan ( Albanian  Qarku i Elbasanit ) is one of the twelve Qarks in Albania . It is located in central and eastern Albania and has an area of ​​3199 square kilometers. The capital is Elbasan .

geography

Elbasan Qark consists of the municipalities of Elbasan, Belsh , Cërrik , Gramsh , Librazhd and Përrenjas and Peqin . The industrial city of Elbasan forms the historical and economic center of Central Albania. In the east, Elbasan Qark borders on North Macedonia . The whole eastern and northern area is characterized by the Shkumbin valley , while the areas in the south and southwest belong to the catchment area of Devoll and Seman . The eastern area is mountainous, but also along the rest of the northern and southern borders there is poorly developed hill country.

To the south-east is the Qark Korça , southwest of the Qark Berat , northwest of the Qark Tirana and northeast of the Qark Dibra .

population

The 2011 census put the Qark at a population of 295,827, which corresponds to a population decline of almost 20% in ten years.

A majority of around 64.41 percent of the population are Muslims , plus 0.51 percent are Bektashites . 5.17 percent are Orthodox Christians. 1.03 percent are Catholic . 0.05 percent are Protestant and 0.03 percent are other Christians. 10.2 percent are non-denominational believers and 3.27 percent are atheists . 13.29 percent gave no information in the 2011 census.

Politics and administration

The Qark Council (alb. Këshilli i Qarkut ) consists of 50 members. The Qark Elbasan has 14 members out of a total of 140 for the legislative periods of the Albanian parliament beginning in 2009 and 2013 .

Until 2015, the Qark was divided into the districts of Gramsh , Elbasan , Librazhd and Peqin with a total of 51 parishes. The administrative level of the districts was dissolved.
