Werner Zorn (* 24. September 1942 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German computer scientist and Internet - pioneer .

From 2001 to 2007 he was professor for communication systems at the Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam , previously he was head of a computer center and professor at the University of Karlsruhe .

Life

Werner Zorn, son of Professor Erich Zorn , attended elementary school in Bad Soden am Taunus from 1949 to 1953 , then the Leibniz Realgymnasium in Frankfurt a. M.-Höchst . After graduation in 1962 he studied at the Technical University of Karlsruhe Electrical Engineering , field of study telecommunications engineering and holds a graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) End 1967. He received his PhD then at the Institute of messages engineer and computer scientist Karl Steinbuch with a thesis setting for linear and non-linear classifiers on the field of character recognition .

In 1972 he moved to the newly founded department of computer science at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) , where he was responsible for the establishment, operation and further development of the service computing center for the computer science department (IRA) for the next 25 years . After being appointed professor in 1979, he chose the subjects of methodical performance analysis and data communication as his main areas of work, which he has continued to pursue ever since.

Zorn set early milestones with the first German Internet E-Mail in 1984, the connection of China to the international computer networks in 1987, and the founding of the Xlink company in 1989 as one of the first German Internet service providers .

In his function as Admin-C for the domain "germany" with the e-mail address zorn @ germany, he was committed to establishing an open network of different computer networks in the German academic sector (CSNET, EARN, EUnet, etc.). This brought him into confrontation with the DFN-Verein and became the main critic of the strictly OSI- oriented funding policy, which was directed against the TCP / IP-based Internet until the 1990s.

After moving to the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) at the University of Potsdam in 2001, Werner Zorn devoted himself to teaching and research on the problem of hierarchically consistent modeling of communication systems , which in 2007 in particular resulted in a methodically new approach to the quantitative analysis of discrete dynamic systems .
