Erich Zorn

Erich Zorn (born March 21, 1898 in Magdeburg ; † February 9, 1996 in Ettlingen ) was a German engineer , pioneer of welding technology and professor at the TH Karlsruhe .

Life

After studying at the TH Braunschweig and the Technical University of Karlsruhe as well as a doctorate in engineering. Zorn was an engineer at the Knapsack AG plant for nitrogen fertilizers and autogenous technology in Frankfurt-Griesheim . In 1949 he completed his habilitation. In 1950 he became honorary chairman of the trade association for the welding industry. From 1956 he was also part-time owner of an unscheduled and from 1958 a professorship for welding technology at the TH Karlsruhe. From September 1961 to 1972 he was a board member of Knapsack AG, from 1963 in the position of head of the research and development department Knapsack-Griesheim AG (Griesheim-Autogen plant).

Zorn is considered a pioneer in welding technology because he made numerous inventions in the field of autogenous welding . With his research, however, he only continued the work of his father Hermann Zorn, who began around 1920 to connect pipelines using autogenous welding in the coppersmith's shop in Meißen, which his father Gustav Zorn founded in 1874 . In the Second World War he was indispensable , because his research into cutting concrete with oxygen lances was considered to be of vital importance to the war effort because of the opening and destruction of enemy bunkers that this made possible .

One of his sons is the computer science professor and pioneer of e-mail communication Werner Zorn .
