Belsh ( Albanian  also  Belshi , rarely also Belësh or Belëshi ) is a small town in central Albania with 8,781 inhabitants (as of 2011). Belsh is located about 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Elbasan and about the same distance east of Lushnja in the hill country called Dumreja .

geography

Renovated city center and lakeshore with town hall in spring 2019

The Dumreja - karst landscape with the Evaporit Diapirdom from Dumreja - lies between the Shkumbin rivers in the north, the Devoll in the east, the Seman  in the south and the Myzeqe plain in the west. The area is characterized by up to 300 meters, in the far north even up to 450 meters rising hills, polja and karst hollow forms . Around 80 small karst lakes ( Liqenet te Belshit / Dumreja lakes ) were formed in these up to 15 meter deep depressions . One of these is the Liqeni i Belshit , along whose western and northern banks the city extends.

history

The region of Belsh was settled in ancient times. On the other side of the lake near Gradishta , the remains of an Illyrian fortification and settlement were found on a hill . Later a Greek colony , the place prospered in Roman times as a trading center not too far from the Via Egnatia  . A little further south at Serafani was a temple  dedicated to Aphrodite . Many terracotta items were found in the adjacent lake and were sunk there in honor of the goddess. The finds from a princely grave are  exhibited in Tirana today . In the 6th century, the fortified ancient city was destroyed by invading Slavs .

Infrastructure and economy

There is a middle school and a hospital in Belsh. The area around Belsh is heavily used for agriculture. It is believed that there is also gas in the Dumreja .
