Librazhd ( pronunciation : [ ˌliˈbɾaʒd ]; Albanian  also  Librazhdi ) is a small town in eastern Albania with 6937 inhabitants (2011 census), whereby the local authorities give a multiple of 16,256 inhabitants (2007). Librazhd is the capital of the municipality ( bashkia ) Librazhd with a modest infrastructure in the health and education sector.

The city is located at a slightly wider point in the Shkumbin valley on the right bank of the river at around 200  m above sea level. A. The valley basin is surrounded on all sides by not too steep, but nevertheless considerable mountains. About ten kilometers east of Librazhd is the border with North Macedonia high in the mountains . To the west, the Shkumbin Valley leads through a narrow gorge to Elbasan .

Librazhd was probably created at the junction of several traffic routes. The Roman Via Egnatia already led through the Shkumbin Valley in ancient times . The main traffic axis at that time between the imperial centers of Rome and Constantinople ran on the left bank of the river high above the valley floor in the Polis Mountains (Mali i Polisit) . The Roman road can still be traced in several places. From Librazhd to the north, a road to Dibra runs through the Çermenika region . Librazhd, on the other hand, was only a small village 100 years ago.

Memorial in honor of the two poets Vilson Blloshmi and Genc Leka ; In 1977 they were executed by the communist regime.

The road through the Shkumbin Valley is still an important transport route that connects the Albanian coast with the south-east of the country and North Macedonia. As Corridor VIII of the Pan-European Transport Network , it has been expanded and renewed in recent years. The tracks of the Albanian railway from Elbasan and Durrës to Pogradec run parallel to this , with the line from Librazhd to Pogradec being closed. Currently (2015) there is a daily train from Durrës to Librazhd. The road from Librazhd to the north is in poor condition, although it is the only link between north and south Albania east of Tirana and Elbasan.

During the communist rule, the city was best known for wine and other alcoholic beverages made in local factories. Today hardly anything is produced in Librazhd. As a regional center, the city thrives on some services, trade, administration and through traffic.
