Cërrik ( Albanian  also  Cërriku ) is a small town in central Albania with 6695 inhabitants (2011).

administration

Cërrik is an independent municipality ( Bashkia ). In 2015, the city was merged with the neighboring communities in the southwest of the former Elbasan district , Gostima (8116 inhabitants), Klos (3262 inhabitants), Mollas (5530 inhabitants) and Shalës (3842 inhabitants). The whole municipality has 27,445 inhabitants (as of 2011).

geography

Cërrik is located about ten kilometers southwest of the city of Elbasan in the plain south of the Shkumbin .

To the west of the city extends the hill country of the Dumreja , to the east is hill country and north of the Shkumbin rise the Kodrat e Krrabës (Krraba hills) - to the south and to the north-east, however, a wide, fertile plain extends.

economy

The plain between Elbasan and Cërrik is dominated by the party's large steelworks , which once provided work for tens of thousands of people from these places, but whose emissions had a heavy impact on the entire region. Cërrik himself was best known for his oil refinery during communist rule . This was connected to the Durrës -Elbasan line of the Albanian Hekurudha Shqiptare railway, which runs along the north bank of the Shkumbin , via an approximately two-kilometer-long branch track .

The city was planned as an industrial site during communist rule. Industrial plants and houses were built where there was once only a small village. The refinery was located outside of the city in the northwest - the town planning provided for a spatial separation of industrial and residential areas. In the meantime, however, the refinery has developed its own small district around the junction of the road to Belsh . However, this is completely separated from the city center by an approximately one kilometer wide green strip with fields.

traffic

The main road SH7 , which connects Elbasan with the places on the coast, runs on the north bank of the Shkumbin . The route is part of Corridor VIII of the Pan-European Transport Corridors . The road bridge over the Shkumbin is located more than five kilometers northwest of the city center, so that Cërrik is away from the traffic flows despite its proximity to international transport axes. The direct connection from Cërrik to Elbasan runs south of the Shkumbin. In Cërrik a road branches off to Gramsh . This connection has been well developed since the Devoll to Lake Banja was dammed fifteen kilometers southeast of Cërrik .

telecommunications

Four kilometers southeast of the city there are shortwave broadcasting systems from Radio Tirana near Gostima .

history

In May 1997, during the nationwide unrest in Cërrik, six officers of a special unit of the Republican Guard were shot dead and over 20 other soldiers were injured. Some of the attackers, who are accused of wanting to destabilize the country, are closely linked to the Socialist Party .
