Radio Tirana International

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Tirana International RTI ( Albanian  also  Radio Tirana Internacional ; known abroad as Radio Tirana ) is the international radio program of the Albanian radio company Radio Televizioni Shqiptar . Radio Tirana now has editorial offices for Albanian , English , French , German , Italian , Serbian , Greek and Turkish .

history

Radio Tirana began broadcasting a regular international radio program on November 22, 1964.

During the Cold War , when Albania was internationally isolated, Radio Tirana broadcast in up to 23 languages. At that time, the programs consisted of propaganda by the communist government of Albania , which was directed both against the West and against the states of the Eastern Bloc , with whom Albania had largely broken.

There were broadcasts in German as early as the 1950s, but regularly only since 1964. The transmitter systems were in Flakka near Shijak (medium wave) and in Cërrik and Shijak (short wave).

In the earlier years it was simply broadcast as “Radio Tirana”. The international program was later referred to as “Radio Tirana Third Program” or “Radio Tirana 3”. An Albanian-language program for Albanians outside the country's borders is broadcast today on “Radio Tirana 3”. In the past, this was also part of the international broadcasting program.

Since November 2008 there has been a live stream and a podcast made available online by a volunteer project.

Transmitters

Broadcasting on medium and short wave was discontinued at the end of March 2017, sometimes because the transmission systems were in very poor condition. All language programs are now broadcast over the Internet via the Radio Televizioni Shqiptar website. Some programs are broadcast by the "Shortwaveservice" in the Eifel .

Since the beginning of 1990, the transmission systems for medium and short wave have been rented to foreign broadcasters, including Deutsche Welle for a long time . Since 2004, the shortwave transmission system in the central Albanian city of Cërrik has been fully rented to the Chinese state . After the transmission technology was completely renewed, numerous programs from China Radio International for Europe, Africa and America are broadcast by the system, including the program in German. The lease for the transmitter in Cërrik expires in 2019 and an extension seems unlikely.
