The Voice of Korea (formerly Radio Pyongyang ) is the international broadcaster of North Korea . It broadcasts radio programs in Korean, Chinese, German, Spanish, English, French, Russian, Japanese and Arabic.

history

The station was founded around 1950 and initially only broadcast programs in the Korean language that were intended for South Korea . Over time, the program was expanded to include other languages ​​(initially Japanese and English). German-language programs have been available since January 11, 1983.

Until 16 February 2001 (the 59th birthday of Kim Jong-il ) was the Voice of Korea part of the foreign radio station Radio Pyongyang ( kor. P'yŏngyang Pangsŏng ) and so was renamed under its name. The Korean-language program of the independent voice of Korea today consists of takeovers of the broadcasts from Radio Pyongyang and the domestic central broadcaster Korean Central Broadcasting Station . Radio Pyongyang is now called the exclusively Korean-speaking part of North Korean international radio.

It is broadcast on shortwave frequencies , on medium wave and digitally unencrypted via the Thaicom 5 satellite in DVB-S standard. The transmitters used by the Voice of Korea and operated by the North Korean Ministry of Post and Telecommunications are among others. a. in Ch'ŏngjin (medium wave 621 kHz , 500 kW power), Pyongyang (short wave, ten transmitters of 200 kW), Kujang (province of P'yŏngan-pukto ) and Kanggye (five transmitters of 200 kW each).

The broadcast content is shaped by the official state propaganda of North Korea. For a long time, a significant part of the program consisted of readings from the works of the late North Korean President Kim Il-sung (e.g. from his autobiography With the Century ).

The station's signature tune is, like many other North Korean radio stations, the song of General Kim Il Sung . The national anthem of North Korea is played at the start of the broadcast . This is followed by the "Song of General Kim Il-sung" and the "Song of General Kim Jong-il".

Youtube channel

Until 2019, the North Korean broadcaster also had an official YouTube channel under the same title. There, however, the news programs of the state television were published and New Year's greetings and the like. a. supplemented in German. However, with the summit meeting between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump in Singapore, this was stopped and the channel deleted.
