Radio Ukraine International ( RUI for short ; Ukrainian Всесвітня служба "Радіо Україна" Vzeswitnja sluschba "Radio Ukrajina" ) is the foreign service of the State National Radio Company of Ukraine Natsionalna Radiokompanya Ukraïny . Until March 1991 the station was called Radio Kiev .

history

The Ukrainian broadcasting company began its own international broadcasts during the Soviet Union , in May 1966. The station was called Radio Kiev at the time and was the third Soviet foreign broadcaster alongside Radio Moscow and the station Peace and Progress . Until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Radio Kiev was overshadowed by these two Moscow transmitters, especially since the most powerful transmission systems were reserved for Radio Moscow even in the Ukrainian Soviet Republic . However, in addition to Radio Kiev, the first and third domestic programs were broadcast on shortwave and mediumwave .

In March 1992, the station was renamed Radio Ukraine International . The international radio of the now independent Ukraine was able to occupy the frequencies previously used by other Soviet broadcasters. In the course of the 1990s, however, many of the transmission systems were closed for financial reasons until only one shortwave frequency was used. Later, other earlier frequencies were temporarily used again. The international service had to save more and more. The German service has not been heard via its own shortwave transmitter since 2010 . Since then, only a live stream on the Internet and a channel via satellite have been offered. In 2011, the Ukrainian service for Ukrainians abroad was discontinued.

The medium-wave transmitters, which can be heard from afar, especially in winter, were switched off at the turn of the year 2012/2013. In the course of 2013, the Bowary transmitter was demolished, initially the shortwave antennas, and in October 2013 also the longwave antennas .

Today's program offer

RUI still produces programs in English, German and Romanian. The RUI audio channel, in which programs alternate in the various languages, is broadcast via live stream on the Internet and via the Astra 4A satellite . There is also a podcast of the show about this. In the meantime (as of November 2019) a German program is broadcast on shortwave 6005 kHz via the Kall-Krekel transmitter.
