Qukës ( pronunciation : [ ˈcuˌkəs ]; Albanian  also  Qukësi ) is a town in Elbasan Qark in eastern Albania . Until 2015 the place was the seat of the Komuna of the same name , since then it has belonged to the municipality of Përrenjas .

Geography and traffic

Qukës is located in the Shkumbin valley in the hilly east of Albania. The course of the river is followed by the SH3 , which is part of the west-east transport corridor of Albania. At Qukës, the SH3 leaves the Shkumbintal and branches off to the east to the Qafë Thana  pass, where it reaches the small town of Përrenjas after around ten kilometers. Librazhd , the most important place in the valley, is about 20 kilometers to the northwest and the Qark capital Elbasan about 40 kilometers to the west. The North Macedonian border at Qafë Thana is around 20 kilometers to the east. Lake Ohrid is nearby .

The operation on the railway line of the Hekurudha Shqiptare from Librazhd to Pogradec , which passes the place, has meanwhile been stopped.

There are various natural resources in the Qukës area that were also mined in the past, including iron , nickel  and chromium .

Population and structure

The Komuna Qukës had a population of 8,211. The administrative unit includes the villages of Qukës, Qukës-Shkumbin, Qukës-Skënderbej, Skroska, Menik, Gurra, Berzeshta, Fanja, Karkavec, Dritaj, Pishkash and Pishkash-Veri.
