The Rruga shtetërore SH3 ( Albanian for state road SH3 ) is a national road in Albania . Over a length of around 150 kilometers, it connects the capital Tirana via Elbasan and Korça with Bilisht at the border with Greece .

Route

The SH3 begins in the city center of Tirana and runs as a winding mountain road over the Krraba Pass to Elbasan (53 km). From there, the road follows the course of the River Shkumbin at Librazhd finally come to Qukës . There the road turns away from the Shkumbin and leads along a tributary to Përrenjas . It then leads up to the Qafë Thana pass and to a crossroads with the SH9 . Then it leads down to Lake Ohrid and along the lake shore to Pogradec . After Pogradec the road leads to the Korça plateau and then on to Korça . From there the last part leads via Bilisht to the Albanian- Greek border at Kapshtica or Kristallopigi .

From Elbasan to Qafë Thana, the SH3 route corresponds to the ancient Via Egnatia and is also part of the modern Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII .

Expansion status

A winding but well-developed pass road leads from Tirana to Elbasan to Elbasan, which is relieved by the A3 motorway . From there an expressway leads along the Shkumbin towards Librazhd. A few kilometers before Librazhd the river valley narrows, which also makes the route difficult. In this section the road is also relatively winding, but also in very good condition and quite wide. This good road condition continues up to the Qafë Thana pass . The subsequent section of the route along Lake Ohrid via Pogradec to Leshnica has not been renewed - it is being built in places. Between Leshnica and Kapshtica (through Korça and Bilisht) the SH 3 is developed as a dual carriageway with two lanes and hard shoulder ( superstradë ) on both sides .

future

The remaining section along Lake Ohrid is currently being expanded.

There are plans to build a connecting road from Qukës through the upper Shkumbintal directly to the Korça plain north of Maliq , which will bypass the Qafë Thana and Pogradec. The first construction work began near Qukës.
