  • The Autostrada A2 or Autostradë A2 ( Albanian for 'Autobahn A2') is the northern approach to the port city of Vlora in central Albania . It is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII .

    Route

Start of the motorway in Levan

The A2 begins north of Fier . It circumnavigates the central Albanian city to the west on a 22-kilometer route that was opened to traffic in summer 2020. It leads through mostly flat area, the Myzeqe plain.

The southern continuation leads from Levan to Vlora. The road soon crosses the Vjosa River . It runs west of the SH 8 parallel to this, passes the lagoon of Narta to the east and currently ends at the city limits of Vlora.

    Building history

The Levan – Vlora section was opened to traffic on one side (two lanes) on March 20, 2011 in order to relieve the SH 8 . On July 27, 2012, the entire route was opened to traffic as a four-lane motorway. The total construction costs for this section of the motorway amounted to 60 million euros.

The work for the bypass around Fier dragged on for a long time. Just two months after the start of construction in the summer of 2013, initiated by the then Prime Minister Sali Berisha , there were complaints that things were not going well. As of September 2017, the shell of all bridge structures and the roadway substructure have been completed. The costs for the bypass should amount to 39.8 million euros. In summer 2019, traffic could finally be put into operation on one lane, and both lanes have been available since summer 2020.

    future

In addition to the Fier bypass, the A2 is to be extended to the south with the Vlora bypass. It passes the city on the northern edge and then leads in the mountains east of the coast past Kanina to Orikum . In summer 2020, the asphalting of the first eleven kilometers of the 29-kilometer route began.
