  • The Rruga shtetërore SH1 ( Albanian for state road SH1 ) is a national road in Albania . It is 125 kilometers long and leads from the capital Tirana via Fushë-Kruja , Lezha and Shkodra to the Montenegrin border at Han i Hotit . It is the main connection between central Albania with the capital Tirana and the north of the country.

The SH1 forms the northern part of the north-south corridor, which connects Han i Hotit on the Albanian-Montenegrin border with Kakavija on the Albanian- Greek border and is part of the Adriatic-Ionian motorway .

    Route

    Tirana - Fushë-Kruja

The SH1 begins as a two-lane expressway in the northwest of the capital Tirana as the exit of the Tirana– Durrës ( SH2 ) motorway . It soon leads to the suburb of Kamza and then leaves the agglomeration near Tirana Airport . At the Fushë-Kruja junction, the expressway to Vora branches off to the west and the connecting road to Fushë-Kruja and Kruja to the east .

As far as Fushë-Kruja, the road follows the old course of the road from Tirana to Shkodra . As a result, it mostly uses a new route that was laid out around 2002.

    Fushë-Kruja - Milot

Between Milot and Thumana , Mamurras exit

After Fushë-Kruja, the expressway leads almost bend-free through the plain to a roundabout south of Thumana . There branches to the east lead to the center and to Mamurras and to the west to the Adriatic coast at Cape Rodon .

From Thumana, the SH1 has been expanded for around 13 kilometers as a four-lane, directionally separate expressway to the junction with the A1 . The city of Laç , the natural area around the mouth of the Mat into the Adriatic Sea and the Patok lagoon ( Fushë-Kuqja municipality ) are directly accessible with the route.

The junction to the A1, the motorway to Kukës and Kosovo , southwest of Milot has been free of intersections since summer 2018. North of the junction, the SH1 turns into a two-lane expressway.

    Milot - Shkodra

    Between Lezha and Shkodra (2013)

The road then runs fairly straight to the entrance to Lezha , bridging the rivers Mat (650 meters long) and Alter Drin (200 meters long). Then she has to cross the city right in the center and then goes over to the Zadrima plain . It passes the disused military airfield Gjadër to the east . A road branches off north of Bushat to Vau-Deja , which then leads via Puka and Fushë-Arrëz into the mountainous region of northern Albania and was the most important connection to Kosovo before the completion of the A1.

After crossing Bahçallëk Street, it spans the Drin again and arrives at the foot of Shkodran Castle Rozafa . At the roundabout there, a swing bridge leads to the other side of the Buna , where a national road connects the Montenegrin border at Muriqan .

The SH1 then goes over the boulevards and main streets of Shkodra to the north side of the city. In future, a two-lane expressway will bypass the city to the west. However, the construction work has not been continued since around 2012.

    Shkodra - Han i Hotit

The renewed SH1 between Shkodra and Han i Hotit (2012)

After Shkodra it goes over the plain between the Alps and Skadar Lake to the town of Koplik , which is bypassed to the east. A branch leads into a side valley and on to Theth . This is followed by an eastern bypass of the villages Bajza and Ivanaj , then the road reaches the small town of Han i Hotit on Lake Skadar. From there a junction leads to the mountainous region of Malësia e Madhe , which connects Vermosh , the northernmost town in Albania, with the rest of the country. Immediately after Han i Hotit, the SH1 ends at the Albanian-Montenegrin border crossing.

In Montenegro, the SH1 continues as Magistralni put M18 and leads via Tuzi to the capital Podgorica .

    Expansion status

The entire section of the SH1 is in good condition today. Since 2006 the street has been renewed and widened or newly laid in sections. With the exception of downtown Shkodra and a few other through-roads such as Lezha, the route has been developed as a two-lane expressway. There is also a motorway-like route between Thumana and Milot, which has four lanes and is directionally separated.

In 2018, the responsible authorities announced plans to upgrade the A1 to the motorway between Kashar via Tirana Airport and Fushë-Kruja to Thumana on a new route, as well as to upgrade the Milot – Lezha route to the motorway and a new bypass from Lezha with a tunnel .
