Velipoja ( Albanian also Velipojë ) is a village around 23 kilometers south (as the crow flies) of Shkodra in northern Albania . It is located on the Drin Gulf on the Adriatic coast directly on the border with Montenegro , which is formed here by the Buna River.
The place is surrounded by a lagoon and wetlands. There is also a nature reserve of around 300 hectares in the region, some of which is protected by the Ramsar Convention . In the east, a mountain range runs through the landscape, separating Velipoja from Shëngjin and the hinterland.
Velipoja is a seaside resort that is visited by day tourists from the area and holidaymakers from Albania and Kosovo . The ten kilometer long sandy beach is one of the longest in Albania and the water is very shallow. With the bathing tourism money came into the place, so that a lot could be built and invested: Numerous hotels, holiday apartments and beach bars have been built. In 2007 the road to Shkodra was renewed and expanded. Besides tourism, agriculture is the second important branch of industry in Velipoja.
The independent municipality ( komuna ) Velipoja until 2015 had 5031 inhabitants (2011 census). The local authorities, however, gave a number of 8,718 inhabitants (2008). In summer, the population increases significantly because of the tourists and the great demand for workers. The area of the municipality was 72.4 square kilometers and included the place Velipoja, the nine villages Reç-Pulaj , Luarza , Gomsiqa , Baks-Rrjoll , Mali-Kolaj , Baks i Ri , Pulaj , Reç i Ri and Ças .
Velipoja is home to the Klubi Sportiv Ada football club , which plays in the second division . Successful were the women of the club, who even played internationally, but have now merged with the women's team from Vllaznia Shkodra.
