Kakavija ( Albanian also Kakavijë , Greek Κακαβιά Kakaviá ) is a small village in the Gjirokastra Qark in southern Albania . It is located in the municipality of Dropull on the west side of a small range of hills above the Dropull plain. The border with Greece runs on the crest of the hill just to the east and north of the village . The range of hills separates the Drino , which flows in the east, from its tributary Xerja in the west.
Like most of the neighboring villages, Kakavija has a Greek- speaking minority.
The border crossing Kakavija- Ktismata just north of the village is of national importance . During communist times and for many years afterwards, it was the only border crossing between the two countries next to Kapshtica southeast of Korça . Even today, the control point between Gjirokastra and Ioannina , along with Kapshtica, is the most important crossing. The route crossing the border is the European route 853 , which is called Ethniki Odos 22 on the Greek side and Rruga shtetërore SH4 on the Albanian side .
