Kashar ( Albanian  also  Kashari ) is a place and a former municipality in central Albania, northwest of the capital Tirana .

Kashar belongs to the Bashkia Tirana. The municipality, which was part of Tirana County , which was independent until 2015 , comprised ten villages and had its administrative headquarters in Yzberish , which has now merged with neighboring Tirana. The municipality of Kashar had over 43,000 inhabitants (2011) and was therefore - in terms of population - the ninth largest municipality in Albania.

Location and infrastructure

Kashar is located around six kilometers northwest of the city center of Tirana south of the SH2 motorway . The hilly areas south of the village are still very rural. Large housing estates, commercial and industrial areas have emerged in the last 20 years, especially along the motorway, one of the country's most important road connections. The well-developed, unused land of former state agricultural cooperatives on the level was suitable for initial projects and later attracted further businesses thanks to the good connections. Today the built-up area stretches from Tirana along the motorway to beyond Kashar. Significant projects in and around Kashar include the Qendra Tregtare Univers and Citypark shopping centers . With the Bejtyl Evel Mosque of the Ahmadijja , one of the largest mosques in the country has been located in Yzberish since 1995.

The Lana runs through the former municipal area in the northeast. There are also four smaller lakes that serve as water reservoirs.

The eastern part of the former municipality with Yzberish was surrounded by several districts of Tirana. In addition to the motorway in the north, the national road SH56 ran in the south , which also connects Tirana with the port city of Durrës , 30 kilometers to the west . A new train station for Tirana a little east of Kashar is planned.

The former Komuna Kashar comprises a total of ten villages on an area of ​​35.6 square kilometers. Mazrek , Kashar , Kus , Kashar Kodër , Katund i Ri , Yrshek , Mëzez , Mëzez Fushë , Yzberish and Yzberish 1 (roughly from west to east) are among them.

The former Komuna Kashar had 43,353 inhabitants (2011 census) and 21,238 households. This makes around 2.15 people per household. The people traditionally count themselves to Islam , but due to immigration from other parts of the country there are also members of the Orthodox and Catholic Church.

history

The village of Kashar is first mentioned around the year 1456, when the army of the League of Lezha met that of the Ottomans on the adjacent plain . The battle took place near an old bridge over the Lana called Limuth .

During the Ottoman rule, which lasted from the 15th to the early 20th century, a dervish monastery of the Bektashi was built in the village .

The Komuna of Kashar was established in 1992; at that time the administrative headquarters were still in Lapraka , a district in the north-west of Tirana. In 1994 the new official seat was opened in the village of Yzberish. Since the community was founded, the population has increased significantly, especially in the period from 2001 to 2011. In Kashar, mainly internal migrants from southern Albania have settled.
