The Tirana railway station ( Albanian  Stacioni i Trenit Tiranë , short Stacioni i Trenit ) was a terminus in the Albanian capital Tirana and was located on the northern edge of the city center at the end of Bulevardi Zogu i Parë . Tirana station was the terminus of the Durrës – Tirana line , which is operated by the Albanian state railway Hekurudha Shqiptare (HSH) . It was closed in autumn 2013 and subsequently dismantled.

The station only had a single central platform with two platform tracks. To the north and south of it, there was at least one siding or track for moving .

In front of the covered platform, slightly offset to the southeast, was the reception building, in which the waiting room and ticket sales were located. This building was built in the second half of the 1980s. Before that, there were only simple barracks where the transport service and ticket sales were handled.

offer

Although it was the only train station in the largest city in Albania, in the end only twelve trains ran daily, as the Hekurudha Shqiptare had further reduced the low number of services in recent years and only had a modest infrastructure. In 2013 there were direct connections to Durrës and once a day to Shkodra , Librazhd , Elbasan and Vlora .

Significantly more traffic was handled in the station in the 1980s. Up to 1500 passengers are said to have arrived per train. If a composition consisted of more than eight cars, the platform was too short.

The line between Durrës and the capital was opened and put into operation on February 23, 1949. It is the second oldest railway line in Albania.

On September 2, 2013, Tirana train station was closed to both passenger and freight traffic as it was about to be demolished to make way for a new boulevard leading north out of the city center. The tracks and railway systems were quickly removed, the station building remained standing for a while.

At first the rail traffic between Tirana and Vora was suspended, later they drove to the train station in the suburb of Kashar .

The plan was to build a new train station in the north-western district of Lapraka , which would serve as a multifunctional terminal for trains, trams and buses. Instead of the railroad, a tram is to take passengers to the city center and from there to the outer quarters in the west and east. The construction of the new passenger terminal and the tram were delayed and had not yet started in early 2018.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development announced in 2016 that it would grant a loan for the renewal of the Durrës – Tirana railway line. In February 2018 it was announced that the government had approved the funding so that implementation of the project could begin. In the first phase, a train or tram is to be run from Tirana Airport to the area of the old train station.

A first part of the new boulevard, which leads over the former station area to the Tirana River in the north, was opened in summer 2017.
