The Adriatic-Ionian motorway ( Croatian Jadransko – jonska autocesta , Montenegrin Jadransko – jonski autoput , Albanian Autostrada adriatikojoniane ) is a future motorway that will run along the east coast of the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea , thus opening up the western part of the Balkan Peninsula .
course
It is planned to realize the route as a continuous motorway. It begins in Trieste ( Italy ) and first leads via Slovenia to Rijeka in Croatia . Most of Croatia is formed by the A1 motorway . In the vicinity of Dubrovnik , the Adriatic-Ionian motorway runs through Bosnia-Herzegovina via Trebinje to Montenegro . There it will continue via Podgorica north of Lake Skadar to Albania and on via Durrës to Greece . In Greece, the route will lead via Ioannina and Patras to the end point Kalamata .
The route is seen by the countries of Croatia , Montenegro and Albania as an important infrastructure project, but it has not yet been included in the pan-European transport corridors by the EU . The countries mentioned have therefore started a corresponding initiative in order to obtain additional funds for implementation.
Italy
From the starting point in Trieste, the existing highway access roads RA13 and RA14 to the Slovenian border are part of the route of the Adriatic-Ionian highway. The RA14 continues from the Slovenian A3 motorway .
Slovenia
The Slovenian part begins with the existing A3 motorway from the Italian border at Sežana to the A1 . The rest of the route is not yet planned, but will lead to the Croatian border at Jelšane , as the connection with the Croatian A7 motorway will be established there. Until this section is completed, traffic will be on a national road.
Croatia
So far Croatia has made the greatest strides in its part with the completion of important parts of the A7 and A1 . At the end of 2013 (opening of the missing 11 km to the Ploče motorway junction (Mali Prolog)) a total of 393 km from the Slovenian border at Rupa will be in operation or even 514 km (uninterrupted) if you drive the route from the Orehovica motorway junction near Rijeka via A6 / Bosiljevo / A1 to Žuta Lokva .
The A7 has been completed from the Slovenian border at Rupa to Matulji including the Rijeka bypass (Matulji - Križišće , 26 km) (42 km in total). There are plans to extend the A7 in the medium term to the A1 at Žuta Lokva (56 km). Until this section is completed, traffic must either take the indirect route to the A1 via the A6 (from the Orehovica interchange near Rijeka to Žuta Lokva a total of 135 km) or the direct route (from Orehovica via Senj to Žuta Lokva, approx. 83 km) via the Rijeka bypass (14 km) and take the D8 national road (known as the “Adriatic Coastal Road” or Jadranska Magistrala , 69 km).
The A1 currently ends at Vrgorac near the town of Ploče . The section (11 km) to the Ploče motorway junction (Mali Prolog) was completed in 2013. This is followed by the four-lane expressway (approx. 15 km in operation at the end of 2013, 10 km of which has already been completed) to the Adriatic coastal road or Jadranska Magistrala near Ploče (Čeveljuša intersection), which currently functions as A1. The further course to Slivno probably via Metković is in the planning stage. South of Slivno follows the already mentioned interruption of the Croatian state territory on the mainland by Bosnian-Herzegovinian territory ( Neum ).
So far there are no concrete plans for the continuation of the motorway through Bosnia-Herzegovina (approx. 5 to 6 km). In 2007, construction began on the Pelješac Bridge , which would make crossing Bosnia-Herzegovina superfluous. It is unclear whether it will become part of the A1.
The further course of the A1 from Doli to Dubrovnik is planned (approx. 35 km). According to the current plan, the A1 is to end near Osojnik on the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina. The start of construction for this section is unknown.

Bosnia Herzegovina
For a long time it was unclear whether the Adriatic-Ionian motorway would lead through Bosnia-Herzegovina or whether it would continue in Croatia past Dubrovnik, in the direction of Dubrovnik airport, directly to the Montenegrin border at Debeli Brijeg.
After a route planning via Bosnia-Herzegovina was already assumed in the transport development plan for Montenegro up to 2020, the exact location of the future border crossing between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro has now also been determined. The point of contact between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro should be between Aranđelovac (BiH) and Nudo (Montenegro). However, concrete plans for the route in Bosnia-Herzegovina do not yet exist. But it will definitely pass near the city of Trebinje .
Montenegro
After defining the route of the Adriatic-Ionian motorway through Bosnia-Herzegovina, the plans for the route in Montenegro have become more concrete. These plans have already been taken into account in the Montenegrin transport development plan up to 2020.
The Grahovo – Božaj motorway is intended to form the Montenegrin section of the Adriatic-Ionian motorway. The motorway will thus begin on the Bosnian-Herzegovinian border near Nudo near Grahovo . The highway will then lead north of the Bay of Kotor to Podgorica and then on to Lake Skadar .
As the construction of the Bar-Boljare motorway or the extension of it to Belgrade is currently more important for Montenegro and the economic situation in Montenegro means that the budget is very limited, construction of the Grahovo-Božaj motorway is not expected to start in the near future. In any case, one can still assume that the motorway is already under construction, since an approx. 15 km long stretch around Podgorica is shared with the Bar-Boljare motorway.
Albania
Albania has already completed large parts of its north-south corridor connecting with Montenegro and Greece (consisting mainly of SH1 and SH4 ). This north-south corridor is also part of the Adriatic-Ionian motorway. The 350-kilometer section through Albania is currently not developed as a motorway ("autostradë") with the exception of a few sections of around 70 kilometers in length. The rest is not free of intersections and mostly only two-lane overland or expressway (called “superstradë”), which have been expanded almost entirely in recent years. Apart from a few through - towns (e.g. Shkodra , Lezha , Fushë-Kruja , Durrës (Shkozet), Fier , Tepelena , Gjirokastra ), only parts of the route around Fier and between Levan and Tepelena have not yet been renewed, straightened and widened.
Large parts of the route will remain two-lane expressways for the foreseeable future (e.g. Han i Hotit – Shkodra and Levan – Tepelena – Gjirokastra).

Greece
The core elements are, on the one hand, the already completed Ionia Odos ( A5 ) from Ioannina over the Rio-Andirrio Bridge to Patras and, on the other hand, a motorway from Patras via Pyrgos to Tsakona (Eastern Peloponnese motorway). The last section of the route to Kalamata , the end point of the Adriatic-Ionian motorway, is a section of the A7 .
The original plans were to build a motorway with a length of approx. 46 km from the Albanian border near Kakavia to Ioannina or to a motorway junction with the A2 . The planning is currently postponed. The Kakavia-Kalpaki Ioannina-section as constructed, partly new trassierte national road (EO) 20 , and national road (EO) 22 in operation
