Metković [ 'mɛtkovitɕ ] is a town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County in southern Croatia . The city's population in 2011 was 15,329. The entire municipality has 16,788 inhabitants.
Metković lies on the Neretva River , which branches from here into a fertile river delta before the main river flows into the Adriatic Sea at Ploče .
The Neretva River has been navigable for small ships for the last 25 km since regulation in 1895 .
The Neretva Delta plays a major role in agriculture in the southern part of the country, as it is one of the few irrigated and very fertile plains in the region. Since 1881, and to a greater extent after 1945, large parts of the marshland were drained and made usable for agriculture.
Near the city are the ruins of the ancient city of Narona , whose importance at that time depended on its location on the river and near the sea.
To the north of the city there is an important border crossing to Bosnia-Herzegovina , which is important on the road and rail side in the course of the Pan-European Transport Corridor V c and connects Mostar with the seaport in Ploče. Metković is on the Sarajevo – Ploče railway line , but has not had any passenger traffic since 2013.
Metković has grown together with its neighboring Bosnian-Herzegovinian community of Gabela . Since Croatia's accession to the EU on July 1, 2013, the fact that the state border is now the EU's external border has caused problems.
