Opuzen [ ˈɔpuzɛn ] ( Italian Forte Opus ) is a small town in Croatia . The place on the left bank of the Neretva , 12 km upstream from its confluence with the Adriatic Sea , belongs to the Dalmatian County of Dubrovnik-Neretva . Opuzen has 3,254 inhabitants (2011 census).
In the Middle Ages the place was called Posrednica . In the 14th century it was a market town and part of the Dubrovnik Republic . The first fortress was built at the end of the 15th century ; the Venetians built Fort Opus on the same site , which is the name of the town today.
After the Second World War, a monumental monument was erected in the place depicting the resistance fighter Stjepan Filipović just before his execution. The monument was destroyed after the fall of Yugoslavia.
