Ston (it. Stagno ) is a small town with 2,407 inhabitants (2011 census) on the Pelješac peninsula in southern Croatia . It belongs to the Dubrovnik-Neretva County . The fortifications around the city controlled access to Pelješac.

history

On the narrow isthmus that connects Pelješac with the mainland, the settlement of Stagnum was built under Roman rule . The remains of a Roman fort can still be seen on the Starigrad mountain near Ston. The salt gardens that still exist today were also created in Roman times.

In the Middle Ages, Pelješac came to the Dubrovnik Republic in 1333 . During this time the present city was founded and fortified. The salt production in the large seawater saltworks Ston , which has been in operation since ancient times , was the basis of the city's economy and at times one of the most important sources of income for Dubrovnik.

Construction of the fortifications began in the 14th century. Three forts were built, which were connected by walls. Over 40 towers were part of the approx. 5 km long wall, parts of which are still standing today. Access to the Pelješac peninsula was fully controllable. The entire system was completed in 1506 and is known as the longest fortress wall in Europe.

In 1996, an earthquake caused severe damage, especially in Veliki Ston.
