The Ston saltwater works are located in the village of Ston in southern Croatia . The saltworks has been in operation without interruption since ancient times and is one of the oldest preserved systems of this type in the Mediterranean region.

The saltworks were one of the main sources of income for the Republic of Dubrovnik . In order to protect them from intruders, the republic built a 5 km long fortress wall.

The production method has not changed since the Middle Ages . It is a natural salt garden where the salt is obtained through natural evaporation from sea water.

The saltworks is therefore a cultural monument that is still in operation .
