ˈɔrɛbitɕ ] (it. Sabbioncello ) is a small town on the Croatian peninsula Pelješac and belongs to the Croatian county Dubrovnik-Neretva .
Orebić [geography
The city is located on the south side of the peninsula, protected by the 961 m high Sveti Ilija (Saint Elias). Directly opposite Orebić is the important Adriatic passenger port of Korčula , which is also of historical importance. Orebić itself has a ferry port to the island of Korčula and is developing again - with one of the sandy beaches rare for Croatia - into an important holiday destination in southern Dalmatia.
Attractions
The Franciscan monastery (15th century) with the church “Madonna of the Angels” is located above the village, where one of the most impressive panoramas in the country is presented to the observer. In the 19th century Orebić was the hometown of many important captains and one of the largest shipping companies, the Associazione Marittima di Sabioncello, was also based here. A maritime museum also commemorates the time when sailors and captains were on the high seas around the world, which is still the case today. The characteristic women's costumes from Orebić show, among other things, this relationship to seafaring . The costumes of the captain's wives gave precise information about the social position and wealth of their spouse.
Surroundings
Orebić is the starting point for excursions to the summit of Sveti Ilija and the Nakovana cave (Spila Nakovana). Because of its location (peninsula), Orebic is also a starting point for excursions to the neighboring islands of Korčula , Mljet and Hvar and to Ston , Dubrovnik and Narona / Vid .
