Vela Luka (literally "Big Port"), Italian Vallegrande , is a Croatian port on the island of Korčula in the eastern Adriatic .

The independent municipality with 4,137 inhabitants (2011 census) is the second largest town on the island and is located in the far west on a deeply cutting bay. It has a ferry port to Split and the neighboring islands. Vela Luka has long been a tourist resort with pebble beaches and offshore bathing islands. There are several hotels and private accommodations as well as numerous restaurants.

The place is only a few meters above sea level . The highest point is the 376 meter high Hum to the southwest . In addition to tourism, fishing and the cultivation of wine and olives are still of economic importance.

The town's coat of arms consists of a white dove of peace with a yellow branch of the olive tree in its beak on a blue background.

Others

On June 25, 2014, a meteorological tsunami ( Meteotsunami ) occurred in Vela Luka : the water level in the sea rose by about one and a half meters within a very short time; then he fell ten feet. This fluctuation was repeated several times. The causes were thunderstorms with strong air pressure fluctuations.

The musician Oliver Dragojević was born on December 7, 1947 in Vela Luka.
