Oliver Dragojević (born December 7, 1947 in Split ; † July 29, 2018 there ) was a Croatian singer, musician and multi-instrumentalist.

Life

His first encounter with music was when he was 5 years old when his father gave him a harmonica with which he entertained the children on his street and the travelers on the ferry Vela Luka – Split. Oliver Dragojević graduated from the Music School of Split ( Croatia ). There he learned to sing first, then clarinet and guitar. He made his first public appearance in 1961 at the Children's Festival in Split with the song Baloni . In 1963 he was singer and keyboard player for the band Batali . With the song Yesterday by the Beatles he won a national amateur singing competition.

His professional career began in 1967 with an appearance at the Split Festival (Splitski festival) . With the song Picaferaj by Zdenko Runjić he did not make it to the final, but he did succeed in his standard repertoire. After his success at the festivals Split '67 to Split '72, Oliver gained experience for his later interpretations with performances in Western European clubs. After a short episode with the Dubrovački Trubaduri group and a session with the Split superstar band More in 1974, he rejoined the Batali group . With the single Ča će mi Copacabana in 1974 he landed at number 1 in the charts, whereupon he renewed the collaboration with Zdenko Runjić and with whose song Galeb i ja achieved the international breakthrough at the 1975 split festival. In the following decades he received numerous awards for performances at festivals as well as for his singles and albums. Among other things, he has been awarded the Porin , Croatia's most important music prize, 21 times .

Oliver Dragojević sang the film song in the film of the same name " Vjerujem u anđele " (2006), in which the actor Josip Zovko also took part.

Oliver Dragojević died on July 29, 2018 at the age of 70 in the hospital in Split of complications from lung cancer that he had been diagnosed with a year earlier. He left behind his wife Vesna, with whom he was married for 44 years, and three sons.
