Konavle ( Italian : Canali or Valle dei Canali ) is a small region and a municipality southeast of Dubrovnik in Croatia . Konavle is usually a collection of villages and communities southeast of Dubrovnik. The seat of the municipality of Konavle is in Cavtat . The vast majority of the population are Croatians .
This Mediterranean region belongs to the Dubrovnik-Neretva County . The central village is Gruda . The population of the Konavle area is 8,577 people (2011). In total, the area extends over 32 villages.
Konavle is actually a flat field, which is located between the Sniježnica mountain and the Adriatic Sea . The area extends from the coastal town Cavtat to the border of Montenegro in the peninsula Prevlaka . Apart from Cavtat, only the southernmost village of Molunat is by the sea, while the remaining 30 are in the hinterland.
The Sniježnica peak at 1254 m is the highest mountain in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The village of Kuna is the highest village in the area at 700 m. Although Gruda is the administrative center of the region, Cavtat surpasses this town in terms of population.
There are many old tombstones in the Konavle area. In 2016, UNESCO declared the tombstone of St. Barbara in Dubravka a World Heritage Site. Further tombstones in Montenegro, Serbia and BIH complement the world heritage site.
The Konavle region is particularly known for its unique traditional costumes and the cultivation of wine and olives.
The Dubrovnik International Airport is located near the village of Čilipi.
