Originally the village consisted of three parts. Those were the two no longer inhabited settlements in the forest ( Stara Žuljana , Croatian for "Old Žuljana") and today's village center on the beach. All three settlements were founded at the end of the 18th century . Later, the less popular inland district was founded. The population is around 200.

The village has a tourist office , a post office , two Catholic churches , three restaurants , two discos , a grocery store and two diving bases .

In the summer season, more than half of the people living there are tourists who are accommodated in private accommodation or on campsites.
