The Ethniki Odos 20 / Εθνική Οδός 20 ( Greek for “national road 20”) is an important road connection in northwestern Greece . It connects the city of Ioannina in the Epirus region with the city of Kozani in the West Macedonia region and is the only efficient road connection between the two regions and between Epirus and Central Macedonia, especially its capital Thessaloniki .

The course curves from Ioannina in a northerly direction through the Ioannina plain to Kalpaki, where national road 22 ( European route 853 ) branches off to the west to Albania. After Kalpaki, the national road 20 turns to the northeast and leads first through the valley of the Aoos river to Konitsa at the foot of the Gamila and Smolikas mountains of the Pindos Mountains. From Konitsa, the national road 20 continues winding north-east on the western edge of the Smolika through the Pindos Mountains to Pirsogiani. In Pirsogiani, the course of the road turns east and continues over the ridges of the Pindos Mountains to Pentalofos. The ascent of the pass after Pentalofos leads the national road 20 via Tsotili to Neapoli in the valley of the Aliakmonas . From there the road swings to the southeast and leads along the Aliakmonas valley to Siatista . In Siatista, national road 20 changes its direction to the northeast and leads on the south side of the Askio massif to Kozani , where it ends.
particularities
The entire course of the national road 20 is congruent with the European road 90 ; however, the Europastraße 90 will be taken over with the completion of the Autobahn 2 (A2) . In addition to the nominal takeover of the European route 90, the main traffic between the centers of Kozani and Ioannina will also switch to the Autobahn 2, as its routing and state of development mean a considerable reduction in traffic compared to the scenic, but very winding and incline-rich stretch of the national road 20.
The national road 20 has a very scenic route through the Pindos Mountains. It also circumnavigates the Vikos-Aoos National Park with the Vikos-Aoos Gorge in a northeast-oriented arc .
