Puka ( Albanian also Pukë ) is a small town in northern Albania with 3607 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is the capital of the homonymous municipality ( bashkia ) and the former district of the same name .
Until the disbandment of the districts in 2015, the municipality of Puka only covered 40.21 square kilometers. Then it was merged with the other parishes in the west of the county. These were Gjegjan (2846 inhabitants), Qelëz (1761 inhabitants), Qerret (1498 inhabitants) and Rrapa (1357 inhabitants). The new municipality has around 11,000 inhabitants (as of 2011). In addition to the town, the old municipality of Puka also included the villages of Pukë-Fshat and Lajthiza, where around a fifth of the population lived.
Puka is located in a mountainous region of Northern Albania at an altitude of over 800 meters. The place is about 60 kilometers east of Shkodra on the main road to Kukës and Kosovo , the Rruga shtetërore SH5 . This route has been used for thousands of years. In ancient times, Puka was called Epicaria , which was founded by the Illyrians . The ancient settlement is four kilometers south.
The ruins of a fortress above the village are said to come from Lekë Dukagjini , a contemporary of Skanderbeg who gave his name to the most famous version of Albanian custom . The fortress was inhabited earlier, for around 2000 years.
The poet Migjeni lived in Puka and a small museum has been dedicated to him.
The economy is strongly characterized by agriculture. The most important employer is the state. Unemployment is around 40%. In recent years the community has steadily lost residents who have migrated to the coast or abroad. On April 29, 2015, the Puka Bashkia reported that it was insolvent. The total debt amounts to 26 million Albanian Lek (around 180,000 euros).
