Franz Werfel (1890–1945)

The Franz Werfel Human Rights Prize is awarded by the Center against Expulsions of the Association of Expellees . It is named after the Austrian writer Franz Werfel , who a.o. in his novel The Forty Days of Musa Dagh described the displacement and genocide of the Armenians .

The Franz Werfel Human Rights Prize goes to individuals, initiatives or groups "who have opposed the violation of human rights through genocide, displacement and the deliberate destruction of national, ethnic, racial or religious groups." awarded for two years in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt and was awarded for the first time in 2003.

In 2007 the jury consisted of the following people: Otto von Habsburg , Klaus Hänsch , Helga Hirsch , Milan Horáček , Hilmar Kopper , Rüdiger Safranski and Erika Steinbach . According to the awarding foundation, the award has the 4th Hague Convention of 1907, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966, the 1998 resolution of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights , but also the conclusions of the session of the European Council of Heads of State and Government in Copenhagen in 1993 and other statements by the European Union on the basis.

  • 2020 Joachim Gauck , most recently Federal President , “who denounced the violation of human rights through genocide, displacement and genocide in various functions”. The award ceremony had to be postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore only took place on July 4, 2021.
