Franjo Komarica
Franjo Komarica (born February 3, 1946 in Novakovići , SR Bosnia-Herzegovina , Yugoslavia ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Banja Luka .
Life
The Croatian Franjo Komarica studied theology and church music in Innsbruck ; 1978 doctorate KOMARICA specialist liturgy . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Banja Luka on June 29, 1972.
Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Banja Luka and titular bishop of Satafis on October 28, 1985 . The Pope personally donated him his episcopal ordination on January 6, 1986. Co- consecrators were the Curia Cardinals Agostino Casaroli and Bernardin Gantin .
On May 15, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed Franjo Komarica bishop of Banja Luka. Since 2010 he has been President of the Bishops' Conference for Bosnia and Herzegovina . He already held this office from 2002 to 2005.
Bishop Komarica received the Heinrich Pesch Prize in 1997 , which was awarded to him by the Association of Scientific Catholic Student Associations Unitas . The award was intended to recognize his tireless commitment to human rights across all ethnic, political and religious borders. At the handover of the Hans-Pesch-Prize, the chairman Lothar Roos said: “In view of the immeasurable suffering that you personally, the faithful entrusted to you and many other people living in the area of your diocese have had to endure as a result of the warlike events of the past, given the example of a truly good shepherd. They have by their endurance, their socio-charitable activity compared to those in need irrespective of ethnicity and religion and by their commitment to the dignity and rights of all people, publicly made known what the social doctrine of the church. " . Bishop Franjo Komarica was made an honorary member of the Union of Scientific Catholic Student Associations Unitas (UV) on December 6, 1998 .
In addition, Bishop Komarica received the Franz Werfel Human Rights Prize in 2005 . In its reasoning, the jury wrote that “in the horrors of the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Herzegovina, he has become a moral authority. Since the outbreak of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, he has been an advocate for human dignity and human rights and has been the voice of the lawless internationally. He stood up for Catholics, Muslims and Orthodox alike ” . In 2002 he was awarded the Coudenhove Kalergi Foundation award.
