Koplik ( Albanian  also  Kopliku ) is a small town in northern Albania with 3734 inhabitants (2011 census). Local authorities, on the other hand, give a much higher number of 11,275 inhabitants (2011). Koplik is the capital of the municipality of Malësia e Madhe with a simple infrastructure to supply the population with consumer goods as well as in the areas of health and education.

The city is located east of Lake Shkodra in a wide, fertile plain. Shkodra , the largest city in Northern Albania, is around 17 kilometers south . It is around 15 kilometers by road to the Montenegrin border. The North Albanian Alps rise east of Koplik .

Koplik was founded by the Romans and was then called Cinna . The local population fully converted to Islam during the long period when Albania was part of the Ottoman Empire , while the rural population of Malësia remained Catholic. After the collapse of the communist regime in Albania in 1991, a great rural exodus from the mountains began. Many settled in Shkodra and Koplik. The newcomers also built the first Catholic church in Koplik since the 18th century.

Central square in 2006 with monument

A monument in the city center commemorates a battle in 1920 - called Lufta e Koplikut (Koplik War) by the Albanians - against the Montenegrins and Serbs who wanted to seize northern Albania after the First World War . In 1945 there was an uprising against the communists, which is why the city was neglected by the government over the next few decades. After a redesign of the town center, the monument was removed in the 2010s.

During the UN embargo against Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Koplik profited from smuggling across Lake Shkodra into neighboring Montenegro. At that time, fuel was smuggled in large quantities. After the collapse of the pyramid companies in 1997, Koplik remained in economic stagnation and many residents - especially the young men - left the place. Until 2015 Koplik formed an independent municipality within the district of Malësia e Madhe .

Koplik lies on one of the most important connections between Albania and abroad. The SH1 road from Shkodra through the town to the Han i Hotit border station and on to the Montenegrin capital Podgorica was expanded in 2012. The mid-1980s was built railway line from Shkodra to Podgorica the Hekurudha Shqiptare is, after it had been illegally dismantled in the 1990s, much of the railroad and sold as scrap metal now back in operation. However, so far only goods have been transported.
