Maliq ( Albanian  also  Maliqi ; German  Malik ) is a small town with about 4290 inhabitants (2011) in the Korça Qark in eastern Albania not far from the border with North Macedonia and Greece .

geography

The city of Maliq is located on the western edge of the Korça plain about twelve kilometers north of Korça. The River Devoll , which drains the plain, flows through the city before breaking through the mountains to the west on its way to the sea.

Until 2015, the municipality included the main town, the villages of Bicka, Gjyras, Goça, Maliq Fshat and Plovisht-Bos, which are located in the Devoll Valley and in the mountains west of the town. Then Maliq was merged with the other communities in the west of the dissolved Korça district. The new municipality has 41,757 inhabitants (as of 2011).

history

To the east of Maliq, significant remains from the Stone Age have been found, which gave the Malik culture its name. These were located around Lake Maliq , which was drained after the Second World War. Large areas of the Korça Plain were previously swampy areas.

During the communist era, Maliq was an agricultural center, particularly for sugar beet cultivation. Mining was practiced in the mountains to the west.
