Bilisht ( Albanian also Bilishti ; Macedonian Билишта Bilišta ) is a small town in southeast Albania . It is the capital of the municipality of Devoll , which belongs to the Qark Korça . The town of Korça is 27 kilometers away.
In 2015 the community ( bashkia ) Bilisht was dissolved and integrated into the new community Devoll , which includes all communities of the former Devoll district.
geography
Bilisht is 930 m above sea level. A. east of the Morava Mountains on a plateau through which the upper reaches of the Devoll flow . The important highway from Korça to Florina in Greece runs through the town . The Kapshtica border crossing is eight kilometers away.
population
Bilisht has 6,250 inhabitants (2011). The majority of the population are Muslims (mainly Sunnis ), but also Bektashi ; but there is also a large Christian Orthodox community and small minorities of other Christian denominations. The population lives mainly from trade and agriculture.
history
Bilisht was first mentioned in writing in 1505. At that time the area was part of the Ottoman Empire . In 1913 the place was added to Albania, but it was under Greek and temporarily French occupation for a few years until 1920. The first school was set up in 1917. In 1921 Bilisht had about 2000 inhabitants. During the Second World War , the Devoll region was a theater of war. From here the Italians advanced into Greece in 1940. But they were repulsed and the Greeks occupied Bilisht until April 1941. After that, the Italians were again masters of the city until they were replaced by the Wehrmacht in 1943 . In the summer of 1944, Bilisht was liberated by Albanian partisans.
economy
There is a textile factory in Bilisht with around 500 employees. There are also some smaller trading and sales companies. Many are also employed in agriculture and animal husbandry, and some find work in neighboring Korça.
Sports
The local soccer club KF Bilisht Sport will play in the second highest league in the 2019/20 season .
