Robert Elsie (born June 29, 1950 in Vancouver , Canada , † October 2, 2017 in Berlin ) was an albanologist .

life and career

He completed his four-year undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia (Department of Classical Philology and Linguistics) in 1972. In the following years he studied at the Indo-European Seminar of the Free University of Berlin , at the École pratique des hautes études and the University of Paris IV , at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Ireland and at the Linguistics Institute of the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1978 .

From 1978 he visited Albania several times as part of the scientific meetings between the University of Bonn and the Albanian Academy of Sciences . He also participated several times in the International Seminar for Albanian Language, Literature and Culture in Pristina .

From 1982 to 1987 he was employed as a translator and interpreter at the Foreign Office in Bonn and from 2002 to 2013 at the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. He also worked as a freelance conference interpreter for Albanian and English . Robert Elsie is the author or editor of around 60 books and numerous articles, primarily in the field of Albanology . He also operated several websites offering information and source material on Albanian art, literature , language and history, as well as ancient photography from the region. Among other things, he collected recordings of text samples of Albanian dialects from Albania, southern Italy, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey and the Ukraine. One of his most important works is the translation of Gjergj Fishta's work Lahuta e Malcís into English.

In 2013 he was awarded the Medal of Gratitude by the then Albanian President Bujar Nishani .

Grave in Theth

Robert Elsie died of MND on October 2, 2017 at the age of 67 in Berlin . Two weeks later his coffin was in the National Library in Tirana for condolences laid , where a memorial service was held in his honor. He was honored by the Albanian President Ilir Meta and academics. Robert Elsie was buried in Theth on October 18, 2017 .
