Albanology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Albanologie is a regional science . It deals with the language, culture and history of the Albanians and can therefore also be viewed as a sub-area of Balkanology . In the context of Albanology, the scientific methods of literature , linguistics , archeology , history and cultural studies are applied. From the beginning, the focus of the research has been the Albanian language .

history

Albanology emerged as an independent scientific discipline at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The scientific study of Albania as part of Balkan studies intensified in the last quarter of the 19th century; the first studies on Albanian folklore and linguistics appeared, some of which are still of scientific value today.

The first university in Albania was founded in Tirana in 1957 and it soon became an important center of Albanology, although humanities research was subject to the ideological constraints of the Stalinist Hoxha regime . Scientists at the university in Pristina, Yugoslavia, founded in 1970, had somewhat greater freedom . In cooperation between the scientists in Pristina and Tirana, today's uniform Albanian written language was codified until the 1970s.

Research centers

Research centers today are the University of the Albanian capital Tirana and the University of Pristina . The Center for Albanological Studies also plays an important role in scientific research in this field. Albanological studies are also carried out in Italy (chairs: University of Naples and University of Palermo ), in Austria ( Karl-Franzens-University Graz ) and in Germany ( Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich ). On the basis of the German special collection area system , the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich looks after the special collection area Albanian language, literature and folklore. As part of this national librarianship, the library collects literature on the above-mentioned subject areas as comprehensively as possible, makes it available to interested parties throughout Germany via interlibrary loan and, as an advice center, answers technical questions.

Albanology is classified as a small subject in Germany , see also the list of small subjects .
