Johann Georg von Hahn

Johann Georg von Hahn , (born July 11, 1811 in Frankfurt am Main , † September 23, 1869 in Jena ) was an Austrian diplomat and albanologist .

Life

Hahn was the son of Philipp Franz Hahn (1770-1836), who had been the Landgrave's Hessian personal physician and Privy Councilor since 1814 and was ennobled in the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1823 . His brother was Friedrich von Hahn .

After attending grammar school in Mainz, he studied law in Gießen and Heidelberg from 1828 to 1832 and received his doctorate. From 1834 he was in the Greek judicial service, which he had to leave with the introduction of the constitution in 1843, the end of Otto I's sole rule. He stayed in Athens and looked after the Prussian consulate in Athens. In 1847 he came to Janina as Vice Consul with the help of the Austrian consul Baron Prokesch-Osten in Athens . In 1851 he was appointed consul in Syra and in 1869 consul general in Athens . He promoted the economic penetration of the Balkans by Austria-Hungary. He is considered to be the founder of Albania research. During his stay in Janina he dealt with Albania. He collected material on site, learned Albanian and proved that Albanian belonged to the Indo-European language family .

Honors

A street in Pristina is named after him ( Rruga Johan V. Hahn ).
