Ardian Klosi (born July 9, 1957 in Tirana , † April 26, 2012 ibid.) Was an Albanian publicist , translator, Albanologist and social activist.

Life

Klosi was born in 1957 into a  family belonging to the communist nomenklatura and graduated from the University of Tirana with a degree in language and literature in 1981 with a thesis on William Makepeace Thackeray  and Charles Dickens . He then worked as an editor and translator at the Naim Frashëri publishing house in Tirana . From 1986 to 1990 he studied German at the University of Innsbruck , where he obtained his doctorate in 1990 with a work entitled Mythology at Work: Kazantzakis , Andrić , Kadare .

Klosi was one of the intellectual leaders of the democratic movement in 1990 and 1991 in Albania. During the first five years of post-communism , Klosi lived in Munich , where he met and married the photographer Jutta Benzenberg. The couple had two daughters. In Germany, Klosi worked as an Albanian teacher and translator. After his return from Germany, he was General Director of Radio Televizioni Shqiptar , Albania's public broadcaster, from July 1998 to March 1999 .

After Klosi returned to Albania, he was heavily involved in civil society and as a journalist. In the last few years before his death, he was very active as an environmental activist , assisting civil society legal cases and advocating for cultural heritage. For example, he clarified the case of the explosion in Gërdec , campaigned for coastal forests and fought against the government's plans to demolish the pyramid in Tirana. As a fighter for civil society and justice, he himself became the target of intense hostility. Klosi's activities are closely linked to extensive journalistic activity. He also ran his own publishing house k & b .

Klosi spent a lot of time translating German literature . He translated works by Bertolt Brecht , Gottfried Benn , Heinrich Böll , Friedrich Dürrenmatt , Georg Büchner , Max Frisch , Ernest Gellner , Franz Kafka , Wilhelm Müller , François Pouqueville , Ingo Schulze and Mark Twain into Albanian . He published a dictionary with Wilfried Fiedler . He has received several awards for his translations, such as in 2008 for the translation of Oliver Jens Schmitt's Skanderbeg biography, which sparked a great public debate and was heavily criticized in Albania. Through his activities - he was also the chairman of the German-Albanian Cultural Society Robert Schwartz - many counted him among the most important mediators between German-speaking and Albanian culture.

As a journalist, Klosi wrote extensively on political and social issues, which made him a well-known person in Albania. He published a lot in the Shekulli newspaper . In addition, he was also scientifically active and published works on Balkanology and Albanology.

Death and reactions

Klosi suffered from severe attacks of depression and tried to commit suicide twice before ending his life. He has also been hospitalized and his depression has been treated. On April 26, 2012, he killed himself in Tirana itself .

The Albanian President Bamir Topi and the Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha expressed their condolences to the family. Topi described death as an irreplaceable loss for the family and for the whole of Albanian society, which today more than ever needs intellectuals with independent and courageous voices who  pursue altruistic goals on behalf of the Albanian people. Berisha wrote in his letter of condolence that the learned world, publicists and Albanian civil society have lost one of their most outstanding personalities. The Socialist Party of Albania expressed its regret at the loss of a man whom it considers a good Albanian with an enlightened mind. She regretted a great loss for freedom of expression in Albania, for civil society and the contemporary culture of the nation: Ardian Klosi created precious value for Albania with his example as an intellectual who stood up for democracy, social justice and for an Albania to be protected . He will be remembered as an active citizen who stood up against the destruction of the environment and who made the voice of independent citizens heard.

Klosi was buried in the Sharra public cemetery in a suburb of Tirana.

“Anyone who was able to experience Ardian Klosi as a friend will remember lively discussions with an intellectual of European stature. Anyone who has traveled through Albania with him [...] has not only met a connoisseur of Albanian and Southeast European culture, but also a man who loved his country. This love was often denied to Ardian Klosi within Albania […]. However, Klosi was one of the few real fighters for an Albanian civil society [...]. "
