The University of Tirana ( Albanian Universiteti i Tiranës ) is a state university in the Albanian capital Tirana and with over 26,500 students and around 600 academic staff the largest university in Albania . The main building, originally built as Casa di Fascio by the Italians in the early 1940s, is located on Mother Teresa Square south of the city center.
history
The University of Tirana was founded in 1957 as the first university in Albania with a total of six faculties under the name of Tirana State University . In 1968 the construction of the campus in the southeast of Tirana, the so-called Qyteti Studenti (student town) , began. In 1977 the number of students rose to around 8,880, about half of whom were women.
In the early 1990s, the University of Tirana was one of the most important centers of the democratic movement in what was then communist Albania . During the first student protests in November 1990, students called for the introduction of democracy and pluralistic elections. In December of the same year, students under Sali Berisha in the university's Qyteti Studenti founded the Democratic Party of Albania , the first non-communist party.
In 1991 the Polytechnic Institute became independent as the Polytechnic University of Tirana with its headquarters in the historic main building. In 2013 the medical faculty was outsourced to its own university, the Tirana Medical University .
The university is a member of the network of Balkan universities . On June 3, 2013, she signed a memorandum of understanding with Bedër University . The two universities have already started building a modern campus in Sauk , a southern suburb of Tirana.
