Arben Nevruz Ahmetaj (born June 28, 1969 in Gjirokastra ) is an Albanian politician ( PS ) who has been Minister of State for Reconstruction since December 2019. From 2017 to the end of 2018 he was Minister of Finance, Economy, Labor and Social Welfare in the government cabinet of Edi Rama (PS).

education

Ahmetaj first studied English with a focus on American and English literature at the University of Tirana and graduated in 1991. In 1996 he received a Masters in Foreign Trade and Diplomacy from the University of Kentucky . In 2009 Ahmetaj received his PhD from the University of Bucharest , where he has been studying since 2005. The title of his dissertation was "Energy Security and International Security" ( Albanian Siguri Energjitike, Siguri Ndërkombëtare ).

Political career

Ahmetaj made his first political experiences in the United States , where he worked between July 1992 and November 1993 as advisor to the minister in the Treasury and as assistant to the treasurer . He then worked at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC until February 1995

Two years later, Ahmetaj returned to Albania, where he headed the minister's cabinet between March 1997 and January 1998 in the Ministry of Finance. Afterwards he was Director General of the Tax Administration of Albania between February 1998 and January 1999. In the following years, Ahmetaj worked in the private sector, where he held various positions at American Bank of Albania and H-Communications .

In June 2003, then Prime Minister Fatos Nano brought him back into politics and appointed him Deputy Minister for Energy and Industry. In September 2004 he changed ministry and became Deputy Minister for European Integration. In the 2005 parliamentary elections, the Socialist Party of Albania , of which Ahmetaj is a member, clearly lost to the Democrats . When the government changed, Ahmetaj also lost his office.

In 2009 the Democrats won the parliamentary elections again. Ahmetaj was elected to the Kuvendi i Shqipërisë as a member of the Qark Korça .

In 2013 he was re-elected by Gjirokastra Qark and on July 31 the newly elected Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that Arben Ahmetaj would head the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Enterprise in his cabinet . On September 16, Ahmetaj began his new job as minister. Later the responsibility for tourism was transferred to him.

In February 2016, he was appointed Minister of Finance after his predecessor Shkëlqim Cani resigned from office. He also remained finance minister in Rama's new cabinet after the new elections in summer 2017. Due to a reduction in the number of ministerial offices, the new ministry was renamed Minister of Finance, Economy, Labor and Social Welfare. After a period of prolonged student protests, Rama dismissed eight ministers, including Arben Ahmetaj, on December 28, 2018. Rama explained the change in view of the upcoming local elections in June 2019.

After the earthquake in Albania on November 26, 2019 , Ahmetaj was appointed Minister of State for Reconstruction in December 2019. The office was created specifically to deal with the consequences of the earthquake.

Private

Arben Ahmetaj is married to Albina Mançka. The two have two daughters, Livia and Kejsi.

Ahmetaj is fluent in English, Italian and Greek; he also has knowledge of Russian.
