Besa Shahini

Besa Shahini (* 1982 in Pristina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Kosovar - Albanian politician (non-party) and educational scientist. Since January 9, 2019, she has headed the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth of the Republic of Albania as a member of the Rama II cabinet .

Life

Childhood and youth

Besa Shahini grew up in the Kosovar capital Pristina and in 1990 experienced first hand the Serbization and Yugoslav centralization of what was then Kosovo. From 1997 she regularly took part in demos organized by the then student leader Albin Kurti in Pristina. In the same year her brother emigrated to Slovenia . In 1998, at the age of 16, she considered joining the UÇK .

Study and training

In 1999 the family moved to Canada . In the first two years there, she considered becoming an artist, but went to York University and studied political science and public administration. When she returned to Kosovo after completing her studies, she founded the think tank Kosovar Stability Initiative there .

In 2009 she completed a Masters in Public Policy at the Hertie School in Berlin .

Scientific and social work

In 2014 she founded another, smaller think tank in Kosovo, the Education Plenum . From 2016 onwards, she focused more and more on education policy and the education system in Kosovo and Albania. She has published over 20 scientific papers in the field.

Albanian Minister of Education

At the end of 2018 there were major student protests in Albania, in the course of which Prime Minister Edi Rama partially re-staffed his government cabinet. So he proposed the then Deputy Minister of Education Besa Shahini to the Kuvendi i Shqipërisë as the successor to Lindita Nikolla ( PS ). She was elected with 77 votes out of 140. She is the first Kosovar or Kosovar Albanian to hold this post.

Besa Shahini has been married to Dardan Molliqaj , a Kosovar politician, since April 3, 2019 . Molliqaj was a member of the Partia Socialdemokrate e Kosovës (PSD) in the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo from 2017 to 2019 .
